Open house for prospective students

Interested in study abroad in India? Want to learn a critical language that will complement your current major and enhance your professional career? The Hindi Urdu Flagship is hosting an open house for interested undergraduate UT students this Friday, August 26 from 12pm to 4pm.

HUF to host teacher training workshop

At the beginning of each year, the Hindi Urdu Flagship holds a workshop on teaching South Asian Languages to undergraduate students. The primary purpose of this workshop is to train our new TAs, but it also provides an excellent opportunity for a general exchange of views on language teaching, and we encourage anyone involved in South Asian language teaching at UT to attend. The schedule includes a useful session on the use of Blackboard (the full schedule is listed below). The workshop will be held on Monday, August 22nd from 2-5pm in the Meyerson Conference Room (WCH 4.118).

HUF bids farewell to 2010-11 Fulbright Teaching Assistants

HUF faculty and staff gathered Wednesday afternoon to celebrate and bid farewell to the 2010-11 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs). Hajra Butt, Urvashi Kuhad, and Mohammed Rukan helped teach Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali respectively during their 9-month stay at UT Austin.

K-12 Hindi-Urdu students visit HUF

On Tuesday, May 3, the Hindi Urdu Flagship had the pleasure of hosting over 30 ninth-grade students from the Dallas-area Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB) school district. The Hindi Urdu Flagship recently hosted eminent Hindi scholar Harish Trivedi from the University of Delhi. As part of his visit, Trivedi conducted a roundtable discussion on issues of translation with members of the UT community, including a number of HUF students and faculty.

HUF to celebrate new graduates

The Hindi Urdu Flagship is hosting a celebration to honor the HUF scholars who have graduated since last May. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 18th at 6:00pm in the HUF center. All HUF students, alumni, faculty, staff, and teaching assistants are welcome to attend.

Famed Urdu broadcaster Abul Hasan Naghmi visits HUF

On Tuesday, April 19th, the Hindi Urdu Flagship hosted a talk by famed Pakistani radio broadcaster Abul Hasan Naghmi. The talk, entitled Josh Malihabadi: Devotion and Doubt, was a wonderful exploration of Naghmi’s personal recollections of Malihabadi and his contribution to Urdu literature and culture.

HUF Director presents research on autobiographical writing in Hindi

On Feb 25th, HUF Director Rupert Snell presented his recent work on the diverse genre of autobiographical writing in Hindi. The talk, entitled Autobiography is Another Story: “Lives” in Hindi, featured audio recordings of a number of Hindi Urdu Flagship students, teaching assistants, and faculty reading from a wide variety of Hindi autobiographies.

HUF hosts lecture on Sufi rock music

Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic religion and cultures at Harvard University, gave a wonderful talk entitled, From Qawwali to Sufi Rock: Exploring Contemporary Expressions of Muslim Devotional Literature on Friday, February 11 in the Meyerson Conference Room at the University of Texas at Austin. Hindi Urdu Flagship students joined UT faculty and graduate students to hear Asani describe the modern Sufi rock phenomenon epitomized by Salman Ahmad and his band Junoon.
