HUF Year in India students make national headlines

Third-year HUF students spending the year studying in India made national headlines in January for their fluency in Urdu and their passion for language study. “American Students Enamoured by the Royal Lingo,” wrote the English-language daily The Hindu. English and Asian Studies major Florence Kerns, one of four HUF students currently in India, told the paper that she was “enchanted by [Urdu] poetry,” and even recited a ghazal by Quli Qutb Shah for the writer.

President of India honors former HUF director Herman van Olphen

The President of India, Pratibha Patil, has awarded the Hindi Urdu Flagship’s former (and founding) director Herman van Olphen the extremely prestigious Sir George Grierson award for a lifetime of service towards teaching and promoting the Hindi language. Van Olphen received the award in a special ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Presidential House) on June 20, 2012.

HUF focuses on enhancing South Asia content in the K-12 classroom

The Hindi Urdu Flagship convened a workshop on April 28th aimed at enhancing awareness of South Asia and Hindi-Urdu at the K-12 level. The workshop, entitled Presenting South Asia through the Traditions of Hindi and Urdu, brought together many K-12 social studies teachers and administrators to discuss the specific question, “How can Hindi and Urdu resources make a contribution to students’ understanding of world culture and literature?”

The Hindi Urdu Flagship recently convened a workshop for university and K-12 teachers of Hindi and Urdu. The workshop featured some informal lectures on pedagogical strategies from HUF’s teaching faculty, a roundtable discussion on pressing issues in the Hindi-Urdu classroom, and a wonderful guest lecture by Prof. Shamim Hanfi on some highlights in the tangled modern history of Hindi and Urdu.

Ali Asani to speak on Khoja identity in South Asia

Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic religion and cultures at Harvard University, returns to the Hindi Urdu Flagship on Thursday, April 19 to give a seminar on Khoja Identity in South Asia at 3.30pm in WCH 4.118. Asani’s talk is entitled From Satpanthi to Ismaili Muslim: Rearticulations of Khoja identity in South Asia.

The quality of the Hindi Urdu Flagship’s language training and student scholarship was once again recognized on a national stage as HUF students Florence Kerns and Ishita Paul both won first place in their respective categories at the prestigious national Hindi debate held at Yale University on April 6.

Friends and supporters of HUF nationwide gathered in Austin this week to celebrate the launch of a major new website focused on documenting and teaching the specialized language of healthcare in South Asia. Language for Health (hindiurduhealth.org) is the product of three years of substantial collaboration between HUF, The University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and New York University.
