The Hindi Urdu Flagship at the University of Texas at Austin

Friends and supporters of HUF nationwide gathered in Austin this week to celebrate the launch of a major new website focused on documenting and teaching the specialized language of healthcare in South Asia. Emily Brandt, UT alumna and 2012 Critical Language Scholarship Ambassador, will host an informal Q&A session for HUF students interested in the CLS program on Thursday, November 3 at 6:30pm over coffee at the Starbucks on 24th St . The Critical Language Scholarship, a program of the United States Department of State, will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2012. The Hindi Urdu Flagship is excited to host the Chris Powers, the National Boren Director, from 12-1pm on Wednesday, November 2nd in CBA 4.328. In conjunction with UT’s Family Weekend, the Hindi Urdu Flagship is hosting a luncheon Saturday, October 22nd in the main HUF center (HRH 3.102). Hindi Urdu Flagship students are invited to attend a talk on Bengali cinema by Dr. Shohini Ghosh this Monday, October 17th at 12pm in the Meyerson Conference Room (WCH 4.118). Ghosh is the Zaki Hussain Professor of Media at the AJK Mass Communication Research Center. She is an essayist on popular culture and a documentary filmmaker. Continue reading >

HUF faculty and staff welcomed new and returning HUF students with a reception and orientation session on Tuesday, August 23 in the Hindi Urdu Resource Center. After students greeted their peers and welcomed our returning overseas cohort, HUF Director Rupert Snell introduced new faculty and staff to the community and talked briefly about plans and expectations for the coming academic year. At the beginning of each year, the Hindi Urdu Flagship holds a workshop on teaching South Asian Languages to undergraduate students. The primary purpose of this workshop is to train our new TAs, but it also provides an excellent opportunity for a general exchange of views on language teaching, and we encourage anyone involved in South Asian language teaching at UT to attend. HUF faculty and staff gathered Wednesday afternoon to celebrate and bid farewell to the 2010-11 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs). Hajra Butt, Urvashi Kuhad, and Mohammed Rukan helped teach Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali respectively during their 9-month stay at UT Austin. Continue reading >
