President of India honors former HUF director Herman van Olphen
The President of India, Pratibha Patil, has awarded the Hindi Urdu Flagship’s former (and founding) director Herman van Olphen the extremely prestigious Sir George Grierson award for a lifetime of service towards teaching and promoting the Hindi language. Van Olphen received the award in a special ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Presidential House) on June 20, 2012.

HUF hosts national symposium on Hindi
In honor of Asian Studies professor Herman van Olphen and his long-serving career in Hindi pedagogy, HUF hosted a symposium entitled Hindi in Texas and Beyond on Saturday, April 10 in the Meyerson Conference Room. Students, colleagues, family celebrate the career of Herman van Olphen
Former and current students, colleagues, and friends gathered Friday, April 9 to commemorate the life and career of HUF director Herman van Olphen. Speeches were made by Joel Brereton, Surendra Gambhir, Juliana van Olphen and Arun Prakash. Ishrat Afreen recited a poem she composed for the occasion. Max Bruce provided an on-the-spot translation. Much food
