HUF Year in India students make national headlines

Third-year HUF students spending the year studying in India made national headlines in January for their fluency in Urdu and their passion for language study. “American Students Enamoured by the Royal Lingo,” wrote the English-language daily The Hindu. English and Asian Studies major Florence Kerns, one of four HUF students currently in India, told the paper that she was “enchanted by [Urdu] poetry,” and even recited a ghazal by Quli Qutb Shah for the writer.

HUF students win national Hindi debate

The quality of the Hindi Urdu Flagship’s language training and student scholarship was once again recognized on a national stage as HUF students Florence Kerns and Ishita Paul both won first place in their respective categories at the prestigious national Hindi debate held at Yale University on April 6.

Critical Language Scholarship alumna to host informal Q&A

Emily Brandt, UT alumna and 2012 Critical Language Scholarship Ambassador, will host an informal Q&A session for HUF students interested in the CLS program on Thursday, November 3 at 6:30pm over coffee at the Starbucks on 24th St . The Critical Language Scholarship, a program of the United States Department of State, will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2012.

National Boren Director to discuss scholarships with HUF students

The Hindi Urdu Flagship is excited to host the Chris Powers, the National Boren Director, from 12-1pm on Wednesday, November 2nd in CBA 4.328. In a session exclusively for Flagship students, Powers will discuss the prestigious Boren Scholarship Program and answer any questions pertaining to HUF students in particular.

Prestigious scholarship program recruits HUF students

Hindi Urdu Flagship students will have an opportunity this week to meet with a representative for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program.There will be two sessions with the CLS representative, Andrea Turpin. The HUF sponsored session will be this Friday, October 14th at 11am in Parlin 301. An earlier session will be held today (Thursday, October 13th) at 4pm in WMB 6.146.

HUF students begin new year

HUF faculty and staff welcomed new and returning HUF students with a reception and orientation session on Tuesday, August 23 in the Hindi Urdu Resource Center. After students greeted their peers and welcomed our returning overseas cohort, HUF Director Rupert Snell introduced new faculty and staff to the community and talked briefly about plans and expectations for the coming academic year.

HUF student awarded presidential scholarship

Leena Warsi, a member of HUF’s 2008 cohort, has just been awarded the extremely prestigious Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship (UEPS). The UEPS program was created in 1973 to make available substantial scholarships for outstanding students at The University of Texas at Austin. Selection is made by a presidentially appointed scholarship committee.
