On Tuesday, April 19th, the Hindi Urdu Flagship hosted a talk by famed Pakistani radio broadcaster Abul Hasan Naghmi. The talk, entitled Josh Malihabadi: Devotion and Doubt, was a wonderful exploration of Naghmi’s personal recollections of Malihabadi and his contribution to Urdu literature and culture.

HUF Director presents research on autobiographical writing in Hindi

On Feb 25th, HUF Director Rupert Snell presented his recent work on the diverse genre of autobiographical writing in Hindi. The talk, entitled Autobiography is Another Story: “Lives” in Hindi, featured audio recordings of a number of Hindi Urdu Flagship students, teaching assistants, and faculty reading from a wide variety of Hindi autobiographies.

New multimedia introduction to Braj Bhasha available

HUF Director, Rupert Snell, has just compiled a new introduction to literary Braj Bhasha aptly titled Braj in Brief. The main features of the language are introduced (with comparisons to their Modern Standard Hindi equivalents) through a selection of couplets by the early 18th-century poet Vrind.

Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic religion and cultures at Harvard University, gave a wonderful talk entitled, From Qawwali to Sufi Rock: Exploring Contemporary Expressions of Muslim Devotional Literature on Friday, February 11 in the Meyerson Conference Room at the University of Texas at Austin. Hindi Urdu Flagship students joined UT faculty and graduate students to hear Asani describe the modern Sufi rock phenomenon epitomized by Salman Ahmad and his band Junoon.

HUF hosts national symposium on Hindi

In honor of Asian Studies professor Herman van Olphen and his long-serving career in Hindi pedagogy, HUF hosted a symposium entitled Hindi in Texas and Beyond on Saturday, April 10 in the Meyerson Conference Room.
